I just broke down and bought the Canon EF 500 F4 IS USM. I picked up a knockoff gimbal head which is really nice in spite of my worst fears. I would like a tripod recommendation since my current unit is woefully inadequate.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Michael,
I use the Gitzo 3530lsv for the past 4 years, and I'm extremely satisfied with it. I use it with the Canon 1Ds Mark II + 500 F4 or 600 F4 lens. Great stability and very light (carbon fiber).

Go carbon fiber because your going to be totting a lot of weight. I think Gitzo is the best made but there are other brands to look at. I have the G1325 and its been a really solid performer.

You bought an incredible lens. You should be able to make some great images with it. My advice..... Buy a tripod that will support it well. The Gitzo 3530, 3540 will do the job. I'm always amazed when I see a $6000 lens on top of shaky legs and a crummy head..

Another vote for Gitzo. I use a 2542L with my Olympus 300mm and E-3 and am extremely satisfied. Unbelievably light and very stable.

A cheaper alternative might be an Induro ct314 or ct313. A ct213 might also fit your needs.
