This is a series of three images. They are large crops and not suitable for the Avian Gallery. However, I think that they are interesting. All three were taken at Jibacoa, Cuba recently.
The first shows this Osprey, confidently looking for prey over the ocean.

The second shows the Osprey with prey....or maybe I should say Fish with prey...

The third shows the Osprey going home....looking at his wing...

Wow. That's terrific. I've never seen such a thing!

At first glance...and second...and third... I fail to see what everyone else seems to be seeing ???!!
This appears to me to be an osprey flying generally away from my point-of-view.
Where is this ...fish?...that seems invisible to me?
Do I need a new prescription from my optometrist?
What am I missing?

Hey, maybe you're right, David! If so, that's even funnier than I thought! I wonder if there is a decisive way of determining if this is just an optical trick. Anyway, I hope all of you do get a laugh out of this.

Now I see what you're talking about. I'm not sure what to make of that!

Are people seeing the patterns on the Osprey's left wing as a fish? I don't think so. I guess I don't get it.

I've gotta say I have NO idea what you folks are talking about... all I see is an osprey. So confused...
Posted by Steve Balke on January 31, 2010 at 11:37 PM
Darn it. The more I look at this image the more I think I'm the victim of an over-active imagination......sorry for wreaking such confusion everybody!

Again I ask; where is the fish... or the illusion thereof?

O.K. I just did what I do when I want to re-evaluate the composition of an image, I dragged and dropped this one to my desktop, opened it in photoshop, and flipped it vertically! And there it is! A "fish" maybe like a small baraccuda...holding onto the tip of the osprey's left wing...Except...
That's not the tip. In fact, The "fish" is simply the slightly twisted undersurface of the long, flexible primary feathers of the osprey's own wing. If in doubt, you can compare the pattern with that of the undersurface of the primaries on the right wing. Now I can't look at it without seeing that damned "fish". I guess that's the test of a good optical illusion!
Cool !

Well done. Thank you, David (although I must admit to some disappointment at seeing my nice little barracuda so decisively transformed to feathers......)

I see it now... thanks!

Cool image, Steve. It sure had me fooled.

I had to look twice too !!!
For a second I thought ok, that IS a fish attached to his left wing tip right? Then I looked again, and realized, I think it is actually just the wing-tip...
Pretty cool though Steve

Thank you for your comments, fellows. They make me feel better.

They're not alone, Fred. I think I'll examine them too!

This is a fun image, its great practice for examining images more closely. I have to say i was pretty confused at what everyone was looking at, then after examining the image for a while, the "fish" apeared.

interesting thread, I had to look hard to see what all the fuss was about, you are right though we need to look harder.
