The sun, on the last three days, has been a tiny 1.7 degrees above the horizon, rising at 9:33 AM behind Mt. Hayes from my office. It stays slightly above the horizon for an entire 3 hours and 41 minutes, in a kind of extended sunrise/sunset. And then sets behind Nenana Mountain at 2:40 PM. We are at the middle of the long, dark tunnel that is an Alaska winter.
But tomorrow we gain 35 seconds of daylight, something we haven't been able to say since mid-June. And in less than a month, we'll be tacking on 6 - 7 minutes a day. There's a lot of cold weather still ahead, and many months of snow, but there will be more light.
And light, after all, is what photography is all about...

hey Jim,
Lately it's been all about trying to make my computer work. As of Jan 1st, it'll be all about a new iMac. :)
Cheers and happy solstice to you.
Carl.

Ahh yes, isn't it great? In SouthCentral we're getting over a minute MORE of daylight each day!!! Hurrah!!
Incredibly, so far it's been a mild winter. Of course, now that I've said that, it will change, and then Redoubt will blow up, and then..........
That's OK, I love every minute of our nice, quiet winter season.
