Anyone have any news on Bosque del Apache, am trying to decide whether to go down this coming week or in January. The bird counts on the Friends of the Bosque website are a little inconsistent for some reason.

Thanks.

When you say the bird counts are inconsistent on the Friends website are you talking about the official count near the top of the website or the new Cornell one they have added a short distance below that on the site? You should pay attention to the official count not the Cornell one. I think the Cornell count is from random people. For example, when I was at the Bosque on Thursday I saw over a dozen Gambel's Quail and they list 4 on the Cornell count. As I responded in my Hawk ID Request post, I would head down there this week. The storm that was supposed to come has disappeared and the weather is supposed to be great. As for January, the bird counts will be similar but that far in advance who knows what the weather will do. I did see 6 of the 9 Tundra Swans listed at the bottom of the official count. They were near the boardwalk on the Marsh Loop. Whenever you go, I hope you have a great time.

Bill, Miranda forums are constantly talking about Bosque. From what I'm seeing from photo's is it's amazing down there right now.

You can pretty much get daily updates from other posts.

I'm looking to head down there the week of the 28th.

Thanks for the comments, looks like it's Tuesday 15th then. Here's a kingfisher from today as a thank you.

I didn't know about the swans, that's nice.

Apparently the farmer blew it on the corn crop this year, so the activity during the day in the farm loop is significantly less than it has been before. This applies mostly to crane activity, however. When I was down there in both November and December this year, the fly-ins and fly-outs were great for shooting, partly because, with fewer birds, there was less crowding. It was easier to get uncluttered shots. And shooting the cranes stuck in the ice in the AMs was quite interesting. But during the days there was lots of other activity with harriers, coyotes, roadrunners, and many, many ducks in addition to the snow geese. Weather was fairly unpredictable this year as compared to last, and unfortunately, one time I was there during the storm. Most of the wildlife ran for cover.
