Saw this hawk at the Bosque de Apache today. Thought I knew what is was but the white bib and non-yellow bill has left me uncertain. Anyone want to help me with an ID? Thanks.

It looks like a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk to me Sally

Sally, the belly band is a pretty good diagnostic for this species. Younger birds also look a little slimmer than the adults.

Thank you guys for the ID. I had my head stuck on a Cooper's Hawk but knew it didn't add up right. Thanks again.

How is Bosque now, lots of birds? I was confused by the number of cranes on the Friends website. Should I head down there on Tuesday, that's what I am thinking. The weather looks good.

The bosque was beautiful yesterday. There were lots of snow geese (most were on the bottom of the marsh loop) and cranes (pools at entrance the best for crane) as well as coyote, mule deer, quail, shrike, ducks, pyrrholoxia, curved billed thrasher, etc. A mountain lion was seen right at the visitor center in the AM before I got there. I would definitely recommend heading down. We are supposed to have a small storm this weekend but it should be clear by Tuesday.
