I'm in the early stages of planning a 2010 trip through Alaska. I'm interested in particular in glacier bears. Having spent a week with BC spirit bears this fall I know the importance of using a worthy outfitter. Especially for photography interests. Can anyone out there recommend a contact, guide service, outfitter etc that might have some experience with these bears.

Thanks much.

I know they are sometimes seen along the shores of Yakutat Bay and Russell Fjord in the spring, grazing along the shoreline, but the outfitters in Yakutat are pretty much all hunters. Russell Fjord is tough to get into; Hubbard Glacier is still pretty close to closing it off, making navigation dicey. Others likely have better suggestions.

Thanks Jim. I spoke with Ryan Scott in the ADF&G this afternoon. His suggestions were similar to yours. He mentioned Icy Bay and Russell Fjord. I'd like to find a guide or outfitter who knows his way around, is familiar with the whereabouts of Glacier bears and knows how to work with a photographer. Tall order I'm sure. If anything else comes to mind, please let me know. Thanks again.

Hey Ray,

Pretty much what Jim said. I don't think Icy Bay is a great option for glacier bears, they tend to be further east, in my understanding. What time of year are you wanting to go? Mark Sappington in Yakutat would be the guy to talk to. His website is Alaska Charter. Great guy to work with. His email is Mark at alaska-charter dot com.

I will be down that way a bit in 2010, so would be glad to talk about it more with you if you want. Lotsa great places to shoot down in that area.

Cheers

Carl
