I am planning a trip to Bosque del Apache during the second week of November. Should be arriving in the area on the 9th. My plans also include some time at White Sands, as well as possibly other nearby places, and I plan to return home around the 13th/14th. I know that the Festival of Cranes is scheduled for November 17-22. Just wondering if I'm going to be too early for the Sandhills, geese, etc. Your thoughts?

I always try to avoid the Festival of the Cranes as the buses that do the loop during the festival scare away a lot of birds in my opinion. I often go about the 10th of November and there are plenty of cranes and snow geese by then, maybe not the numbers as later, but plenty. Sometimes there is still some fall color then too, although it feels like an early winter here this year. I agree with Phillip, good to keep up with the bird tracker and the friends of the bosque website. Last year on November 13th I even saw a Sungrebe at the Bosque.

Bill,
I visited Bosque last year, right as the fest was ending, and there were tons of snow geese and sandhill cranes, so going earlier should be alright. I'll avoid the fest crowd altogether next time, the refuge fills quickly and all the traffic does spook the birds.
