I have been asked by my local nature reserve, to provide 15 images for use in postcards, they have asked me for a price for the 15. I have not got a clue what to charge, as they are a charity driven reserve I don't want to charge corporate rates, has anyone done this sort of thing before, and can give be a bit of a guide.

Subject to licensing limits I put on the photos (i.e., no uses other than postcards, no transfers, etc.) I probably wouldn't charge all that much. I don't have fotoquote on this particular machine, or I could give you a range of prices. But if the nature preserve was on my list of favorite charities or causes, I'd probably do it as a donation. When you are dealing with local charities, they don't have much money in the first place. Then it boils down to what they can afford to pay vs what you're willing to donate.

Thanks for the reply Hank, I take a lot of photographs there, its almost my second home  , the manager insists on paying me something, I think I will charge him only a few pounds and ask for a few copies of each postcard for my own use.

Thanks

Sounds as though the manager is not only highly ethical, but also values the service your photography provides to the refuge. It's a relationship to be treasures and sad to say, far from the norm in most places. We do a fair bit of "charity" work for our favorite causes, but send all others packing if they ask for free contributions or work. And our favorites are selected as much for their appreciation of our work as for our appreciation for their work.

Since you know the manager you may want to give him a break...but the standard for use of a photo for a postcard for bulk printing in the US is about $100.00 per usage...so depending on the contract some use it once, or some have a 5 year right to reprint, then they have to pay for it again after that time. That's my experience with postcards.

Thanks for the replies, I have decided to let him have them for a token amount and 10 copies of each postcard for my own use, I will be meeting with them in the next week or so, I have now been told they want to speak to me about information posters too.

Sounds like a growing relationship! Empires have built on such humble starts.

Congratulations! :toast:
