Can some one give me so tips for traveling on the AK RR. Their site states "Carry-on bags may not exceed 15" x 14" x 6" Gosh that is just a brief case. We will be taking an Xt a 50D with the following lenses 20-35 2.5, 100mm ( for those tiny landscapes), 300mm ( plus 1.4 tc), a 70-200 f4 and a small benro travel tripod. I am trying to figure out how to safely get all of our gear on the train as carry on. We have two Think Tank holsters and a nice vest would those work to get all of this on board or should I consider leaving some stuff home or getting a huge purse?
I traveled on the AK RR four years ago, from Denali to Anchorage. I had all my gear with me. No trouble then. The only problem I had was getting my other baggage. It took the better part of two hours for me and my son and grandson to get all our baggage. They unload all the baggage for the whole train into one big marshaling area, and it seemed to be just the luck of the draw as to when it would show up!
I really don't think you will have a problem, at least not in the day coaches, unless they have changed their policy. Maybe someone else can comment who has ridden with them more recently?

Well I do hope they are faster now unloading baggage. Apparently few if any people carry much photo gear on the train I asked the question on 3 forums and so far you are the only person to reply. Not very promising, now I just hope I do not regret taking the train.
I wouldn't sweat it. It was actually very pleasant. The food was good, the coach was so roomy and uncrowded, I actually took a nap. The whole trip from Denali took about 6 hours, but there were frequent stops, lots of photo opportunities. It was a night and day difference between the railroad and a packed, uncomfortable jet.
I have never had a problem taking a large camera bag on the train, although that has been the Anchorage to Seward end which tends to be less crowed. Visitor numbers have been down this year, so there should even be more room, I would just bring it.
I've never had a problem lugging my camera bag and big lenses on the Fairbanks-Denali N.P. run or check the FAQ at the website. If you still have questions, call the Alaska Railroad and ask: 800-544-0552
