Large bird demonstrating wariness

The day after our state's 6 week long spring turkey hunting season I am returning home from a photo excursion on a gravel road alongside edge habitat, where pine forest meets broken and rolling hills and expanses of short grass prairies. At a distance of perhaps 1/4 mile I notice the silhouette of a lone turkey ahead, very close to the road and standing in a grassy flat. I assume it is a lone gobbler hunting the newly emerging grasshoppers in the short grass meadows.
As I approach his location I suddenly cannot see him! I stop my truck. Out in the "very" short grass prairie I can see a shape, so I get out and walk across the ditch to the fenceline and snap this image.

The tom turkey, finding himself out in the open with a vehicle approaching, chose to flatten himself and hide rather than run and call attention to himself. The distance is maybe 30 feet.

The second post is where I walked 90 degrees around him to see through the short grass for an image. Shortly thereafter his nerves gave out and he leaped to his feet and ran...

Here is where I worked my way into a new perspective and his head is raised, as if understanding the "jig is up."

Very interesting Lon. I always feel sorry for all the animals threatened during hunting season. I am not against hunting. However at least in my area many hunters, not all, just enjoy the killing and do not even eat their "trophy".

Lon,

This is an interesting series and it shows your great eye for spotting this bird all hunkered down like it was.

I especially like the second images point of view and how the tom has it's eye on you.

Interesting observations.
