I'm considering buying a little point and shoot to carry around with me on ultralight hikes and more daily shooting. Some suggestions would be appreciated.

Not having seen reviews or actually holding one in hand, the following look pretty interesting.
Canon G10 is a great camera apparently capable of some high quality images with low noise and it has RAW capture. 5x optical zoom from 28mm to 140mm.
Nikon announced their P90 - 26mm-624mm - F2.8-F5 - image stabilized and it focuses down to 1 cm. It has a burst mode of 15 fps. If it offers RAW and low noise capture along with reasonably fast focusing, this would be my choice.
Canon SX10 IS looks to compete favorably with the P90 and seems worth a look as well.
These cameras seem to offer DSLR-like features, above average image quality and good portability. As always, everyone's mileage will differ.

I love my G9. Results are excellent -- 12 by 18 inch (or larger) prints that will stand up to close scrutiny. I'm also lusting after a Sigma DP-1. Fixed 28mm F4 lens with an APSish sizd sensor and a manual focus wheel. Metal body. Pocketable. SLR like results (I've read). Sells for about $470 on Amazon (was $899).
If you are considering a super zoom don't leave out the Panasonic FZ28. DP review picked it for your purposes over the Canon SX10.

I have owned a G9 for two years. I think it's great. I hike, ski, canoe, climb, work with it. Great pictures. My son has a G10, it's an improvement. Battery last long time. Nikon's p6000 is equal, it has GPS, drains battery power fast, but is cool. Same good quality as G10.

I have the Panasonic LX3 and LOVE IT. It may not have as many pixels as the G10, but its got a great lens (24-60mm equiv, f2-2.8), and uses its pixels very well. The base ISO files are very clean. The OIS system works extremely well. Its also smaller and lighter than the G10. Its also well thought out with features a photographer is actually interested in using accessible.
