Post your events here! Do you have an idea for a meetup? It could be a simple coffee "sit down" to discuss photography, an upcoming gallery show or book signing, or a day/week in the field where you are looking for fellow travelers.

Just to get us started here. Something I've always wanted to do is to start an Aurora Photography Group. Solo trips looking for aurora are usually long and tiring, but in a small group we can keep better watch, travel safer, & cheaper. This aurora group will primarily be a Southcentral Alaska group - I'm based in Wasilla, but Anchorage photogs are just a short drive away. Typical locations may include: Eklutna Lake, the Glenn Hwy approaching the Matanuska Glacier (big open skies!) and beyond, and Denali overlooks. Due to work schedules, we'll probably start out with weekend trips: Friday, Saturday, and perhaps Sunday nights. These shoots can turn out to be long, cold nights so prepare accordingly. The trips will not be scheduled far in advance, since aurora can be difficult to forecast - not to mention coordinate with proper clear skies. Once a candidate weekend approaches, an email will be sent out to check on interest of a group trip.

Email me if you are interested. :toast:

A good idea, but not too helpful in Fairbanks. It also seems to be a very slow year for solar activity and aurora. During all those clear days in the cold snap, we didn't see aurora up here once. We must be at the bottom of that 11 year sunspot cycle.

I agree with the distance issue and lack of solar activity. Hopefully by growing our community, sub-chapters might sprout up. Fairbanks, being one of the larger population centers, could easily be one of those community centers for photography... Especially with the U of A, there got to be some future photogs just waiting in the eves:)
I just want to get the idea of an aurora club going... So that when the shows do arrive, we'll be ready. If we build it, they will come!

It's a good plan. I know of a couple photographers in Fairbanks who hang out at NPN, but haven't joined, or have let their membership lapse. I'm not aware of any active NPN members from the Fairbanks area. Maybe some can chime in?

A reminder that the Copper River Shorebird Festival is less than a month away. The 20th annual festival will take place May 7-10, 2009. While there may not be immense numbers of species, there are staggering numbers of birds, running to the hundreds of thousands. More information. Hope to see you there.

The Tanana Valley Sandhill Crane Festival is coming up. In Fairbanks, August 21-23, 2009. Details. My article talks about the Festival in more detail. Hope to see some of you there.

Arctic Audubon here in Fairbanks will be hosting a presentation, "Bird Photography in Ecuador" featuring, ahem, yours truly and my buddy Ron Teel. November 9, 2009 at 7:00 PM, Noel Wien Library Auditorium.

Is it just me, or am I the only one posting events?

Any more events going on in the region?

The Annual World Ice Art Championships start tomorrow, February 28, 2012 and run to March 18 in Fairbanks. The spectacular work of these ice carvers is among the best in the world. The sculptures, especially at night, are stunningly beautiful and amazingly photogenic.

If you are in Alaska, this is a don't miss event.
