Uranium mining near Grand Canyon

Anyone up on this? As I understand it, from north of the border, the U.S. government had about 800 or so permit requests backlogged for mining around the Grand Canyon. There was, apparently, a moratorium on mining/digging in the area so the applications hadn't been dealt with. Again, as I understand it, Bush is, before he leaves office, going to or has, signed authorizations to allow these backlogged applications to move forward which could open up areas very near the Grand Canyon to uranium mining. I believe he's also signed other authorisations that will impact currently protected areas in California but I can't recall what those were.

Does this bother anyone? Is there anything that can be done about it? Or is Bush using the power of Executive Orders to push this through so it can't be stopped?

There is only one ultimate answer to the "green" issue:

“The power of population is so superior to the power of the Earth to produce subsistence for man, that premature death must in some shape or other visit the human race”.—Thomas Malthus, 1798 as quoted in the Wall Street Journal, 24March2008, pg. 1.

Do with that what you will.

I sadly agree with Larry, but that's another story... Yeah, as i was returning home from Zion i heard over the radio that Bush had just opened 360,000 acres up to mining etc. Hopefully the lawsuits will keep this in check.
