Early mornings and late nights are what Alaska is all about this time of year, even down here is Southeast. Based on the Alaskan contributions to the recent "Solstice" weekly challenge, I'd say we're all well aware of it. Last Thursday, it took until almost seven o'clock before we were finally able to start our hike to the glacier's flanks. We trekked for a while, and did a little bit of climbing before I finally pulled out the camera. This image actually features the crevasse/moulin in which my brother and I climbed. The exposure blend, which was necessary even this late because the northern sky is visible, was difficult for me to achieve in color, so I converted to black and white. There wasn't much color other than the obligatory glacier blues anyway.
When we finally got home at twelve thirty, I was immensely satisfied with myself. My brother and my wife (over eight months pregnant), though they were definitely troopers, were pretty wiped out. Needless to say, none of us was up at three for the sunrise.

Hey Kent-
Normally I'm not a black and white guy, but this is great. Love the detail you captured - it really demonstrates the "other-worldly" quality of a glacier. Your use of a wide angle with the crevasse and the leading lines it produces is superb. It really directs you into the frame and the terrain beyond. Like your other images - its great.
That's a really nice view of a glacier crevasse, Kent. One of the things about glaciers is that there seems to be no sense of scale to them, and this image bears that out.
One of my frustrations with glacier images is the dirt, and for some reason, in my images, it really interferes with the blue color. This B&W solves that problem!!!!
On the subject of the solstice- GEEZ I HATE IT WHEN THE DAYS START GETTING SHORTER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I never have enough time to get things done as it is, and now the days are getting shorter? ughhhhh......
