Print Size and Price Question

Hello All,
My first show starts this weekend. It's a very small non profit gallery in a small town. So I'm asking $25 per 8x10. (That seems to be the going rate as set by previous shows there)

My question is, what other size prints do you usually have available? And how much would you charge?

I'm thinking I want to offer 5x7's and 11x14's.

Thank you very much for any ideas,
Pat

Pat, have you lined up your costs to make sure the prices are worth the effort? Consider printing, matting, etc. and also the amount of time you put into it. You may find that 8x10 and 5x7 are not that far off in terms of cost to produce.

I agree with Guy. We basically no longer sell 5x7's, as the price is similar to 8x10 and they cut into 8x10 sales. Largest size offered depends on available display space, but displaying a very large framed print or two always helps sales of your smaller ones, even if the big ones don't sell. You never know though. Sales for big prints do come through. In our studio we display as large as possible, following the old wisdom that you will usually sell one size smaller than the largest. Seems to be true for us, because we sold lots of 16x20's when we we were displaying 20x24, and once we started displaying a few 30x40's, the average print size of our sales really jumped. Same applies for proof reviews on monitors.

I just had my first Show and Sale this past Sunday. This was a big deal on a number of fronts, as it was the first time I showed my work in public, too!

Guy and Hank make some interesting points which I will have to consider, too. My pricing approach was to research the asking prices on the web pages of several of the members here. I looked for patterns and (as a newbie) priced myself at the lower end. I should mention that this was a street fair environment, so I was competing with art & craft types as well as several painters and photographers. My largest prints were 11X14, as this was the largest I had in frame and mat stock. None of those sold. However, I sold a bunch of 5x7 and 8x10 prints (right in keeping with Hanks comments, interestingly), both matted and matted/framed, moving about a third of my inventory.

I was pleased with the results of my first public exposure and will have another similar show in about a month to try some refinements. FWIW: my prices were 5X7 matted: $25, framed $35, 8X10 matted $40, framed $75. 11X14 were framed only at $100. All frames were off-the-shelf types found at local discount stores.

Hope that helps.
