Does anybody have any experience with this lens? I am looking for a lens that I can carry while hiking. I have a Nikon D70. Any suggestions for a good hiking lens would be welcome. I was thinking of a 70-200 f2.8 but all of them seem too heavy for carrying very far.
Thanks Charlie and Basil for your comments and for informing me about www.photozone.de--it's a good website.
I wound up buying the Sigma APO 50-150mm f2.8 ex, and I plan on buying the 1.4x teleconverter later. True, it's a little heavy for a walkabout, but the lens really seemed right in my hands. I had nothing that was 2.8 yet, and this one is still lighter than most. I took it to a local park, and it did great on squirrel jumping between sun and shadows. The lens also did fine on birds hovering near a feeder.
Call me old fashioned, but I just can't bring myself to trust any zoom lens that goes more than three times. Regards and thanks for the advice. FYI, I understand Sigma is working on an 18-200 vibration reduction type lens.
I agree on the Nikkor 18-200. VR and "macro" at 1:4.5. Good quality in construction and quality of output. Just GREAT money value.
I'm not sure how hard it is to get now but there used to be a long waiting list to get it for a long time and I think there still is. Very popular.

I have a Sigma 70-300 APO Macro, not the DG version though. At the 300mm end it flexes considerably in the middle. There's something very un-nerving about a 300mm lens that bends in the middle, and I can't remember the last time I used it.
I now use a Nikon 20-700/2.8 and a 300/2.8 they're in a different league, weight & price.

For what it's worth, I had a Sigma APO 75-300/4.5-5.6, which is a fairly old lens, but it worked quite o.k., even at 300 mm.

Basil
