I am working on creating my website! I would like to have several links to photography related sites. I want to put the sites' logos on the page instead of just a typed link. Can I cut and paste logos from sites, or is this a copyright violation? Should I email the sites and ask permission to use their logo to create a link to their site? I want to make sure all is done properly! Thanks for your help.

Hi Alice,

This is one I can answer - yey! Seriously, I build websites and provide marketing consulting to small businesses, and YES, you should ask the company if you can download and use their logo on your own website, even if you ARE doing them a favor by putting their logo and link on your website.

I'm so glad you asked, as many don't think to ask first. To me, a logo is just like an image - both are copyright protected, and permission needs to be requested before using.

Oh, and one more thing - this is a great marketing opportunity for you. I'd put together a carefully crafted email to those companies you want to add to your site, and let them know that you're doing this to help them build business/get more visitors to their website, too. It would be great, if they are willing, to provide reciprocal links back to your website as this will improve your rankings in the search engines, especially in Google, which gets 60% of all search engine traffic.

Don't forget - on the resources page for this website, Jim has already placed the logo and HTML you need for linking to NPN.

Beyond that, Nancy's reply probably can't be improved on.

You should definitely ask prior to using a company's logo on your site. However, some sites, like mine, for instance, include pre-made banner images. If you link to my page using my banner, I don't expect people to ask first.

While I don't personally use other people's banner images on my site (I think pages packed with banner images look cluttered), I know people use them, so I provide a ready-made image for them.

Is this a personal website or a business site?
