Hi,

I've done some photography in southeast British Columbia and am looking at doing some photo essay queries to Canadian travel or photography magazines. The only one I know of off hand is Photo Life. Does anyone here have any suggestions for other magazines? If so, do you have good or bad comments about them or any other advice?

Speaking of Photo Life, does anyone know if they have usage rates for photos and what the pay range for text is or any other comments?

I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks, Randy

Randy,

"British Columbia Magazine" at http://www.bcmag.ca/ will be worth a try, most of us ex-pats get it .

You might try the AAA magazine, they usually run local travel spotlights on the region for members as well.

Good luck,
Alex

Randy, I don't know where you live but keep in mind that Canadian magazines get government funding if they commit to publishing primarily Canadian content, making it very hard for non-Canadians to get published.

Randy,

This page has a good list of Canadian publications.

Canadian Geographic may be a good bet.

The restrictions Guy refers to were a formula of content and advertising which largely disappeared with free trade. However if a magazine is receiving a government subsidy, or just by publishers preference, Canadian contributors will have a better chance.

A number of our northern magazines use quite a bit of non-Canadian work relying on pros and semi-pros that are adventuring, and have the money to do so, in the Arctic. The costs of travel here making it prohibitive for assignment work.

The Gov't funding thing means they want Canadian content. It does not matter who writes the content (a Canadian or not), so if you plan to write and photograph about BC you will have no problem getting stuff in whether the magazine is gov't funded or not.

Photo Life pays for a photo/text package. They pay pretty low (about $500 for a feature article) because they have very little advertising but they feature your work in good layout, and big photos.

You might also try the new mag Outdoor Photograhy Canada www.outdoorphotographycanada.com - it is new and so will have fewer contibutors right now and will be easier to get in than Photo Life (and they actually pay better).

Canadian Geographic is great, pays really well but you need to be a first class writer to get your stuff in or as a photographer you need to team up with a great writer.

Darwin - thanks for sharing - I subscribe to a few Outdoor magazines & this one is new to me. (Guess it hasn't made it to the shelves in Osoyoos) I see you are a columnist listed for it as well. Looking forward to finding out more about this magazine! :wavey:

Thanks Darwin, I haven't heard of the magazine either so I appreciate it.

Yes, $500 is pretty low for a photo/text package--less than what Forest Magazine pays, which is a small magazine put out by Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics and goes out to members only, not even on the newstand.

Reading the Outdoor Photography Canada guidelines I'm a little confused about one part: "All published editorial becomes the property of Outdoor Photography Canada and may not be published again in part or in whole, in print or on the Internet without the publishers written permission."

I'm assuming they are talking about text only since they also state, "Outdoor Photography Canada only purchases photography for one-time publication rights for use in the magazine and on its website. " ?

I would list myself as only a third class writer so suppose I'll avoid Canadian Geographic
 Thanks, Randy

Yes, the OPC mag just wants rights to written content for a year - you are free to publish the same photos elsewhere of course. Darwin
