Was just asked to make a submission, on spec, to a local magazine. They request the submission to be in high res. I'm a bit leery of doing this and was curious as to what others are finding regarding the submission of such images on speculation for publication.

I wouldn't worry about it. I will suggest though that you register your copyright with the Library of Congress so if the magazine abuses your trust you will be able to recover your damages.

Guy,

As neither I nor the magazine are American would copyright in the Library of Congress be applicable? Not something I worried about in the analogue world. Though I did have an escort agency scan a Toronto skyline from a stock workbook for their website.

David, click on the Preferences link above, add your name and location to the Signature box. Then in the future there won't be any misunderstanding about where you live.

I regularly submit high-res images for evaluation to magazines, it's a normal part of the business. If it's a reputable magazine, I wouldn't worry about it.

Bob,

Wanted to keep my location a secret. Not simply because there is some beautiful landscapes up here, but it is -35C tonight. I was concerned if members knew where I lived they might question my sanity!

Thanks for your perspective.

Dave, you can file your copyright through the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. The CIPO website is at this link, http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/sc_mrksv/cipo/cp/cp_main-e.html. It has all the information on filing and filing fees. You'll need to register as a user on the Strategis website (it's free). Filing fee is $50. Not sure if you can file multiple images under the same registration or if it's $50/image. That would seem a bit excessive, but that's our government for ya. It can all be done online with payment by credit card. You'll receive a copyright certificate if the application is accepted. If they want more information, they'll send a letter asking for it. You don't need to file a copy of the image, just the title. For photographs, copyright extends for 50 years from when the photo was taken. This link, http://www.trytel.com/~pbkerr/copyright.html, explains a bit more and what you should do to protect your copyright when you're displaying or submitting the image.

You are so lucky!

I live in the freezing rain capital of the world :frown: La Belle Ville in case you didn't get it

And oh yeah, it's freezing rain right now; just like it's been atleast for the last 14 hours

On a completely different note Dave, you wanted to keep your location secret so people wouldn't think you're insane and I'm working on a project that I hope will eventually let me spend a couple months in Dawson City in the dead of winter. So who's more insane?

Robert,

At the moment, Yellowknife is the coldest spot in Canada at -32C. Even Alert in the high Arctic is -29C!

I still have difficulty with the concept that all those clothes your mother dressed you in as a kid and you thought weren't cool, now seem like a really good idea.

LOL. Well David, I lived in Calgary for 4 years so I understand cold. The first winter I lived there the entire month of December was temps in the mid -30's to -40s with windchills in the -60s (all temps Celcius). The ENTIRE month. And no Chinook to provide a respite from the cold. I was ready to move back east at Christmas. Januray got a little better with temps in the -18 to -25 area and less wind.
