CANP ‘Funshop’ Information

When: Thursday afternoon October 5 through Sunday morning October 8th.
Rendevoux Location: 4-Jeffrey Campground on the South Fork of Bishop Creek

If you are not familiar with how to get there, here is what you need to do:

1. From the town of Bishop on US 395, take W. Line Street (CA 168 west) west, toward the Sierra.
2. After a few miles, make a Left onto the road that leads to South Lake.
3. Go about 1-1/2 miles. The campground will be on your left. You’re there!

• I will post a note on the bulletin board (on your right, just before you cross the creek into the campground) advising you which campsite I will be in.

• Look for a yellow, Bibler tent and/or my truck. I drive a white Toyota Tacoma Xtra Cab 4x4 with an aluminum toolbox in the bed. The license is CA-5X28502.

• If I am not there, go ahead and find a campsite and leave a note as to which site you will be in so that I can tie in with you.

I hope to see you! :wavey:

Have a great trip and get plenty of Photo Loafing in! I hope by some small miracle I can make it up there and say hi. Should be a beautiful weekend.

Thanks for that information Preston. From the sleepy number of responses to this thread it appears few may show up unless there are more lurkers here than it appears. I'll be driving over to the eastside either Sunday or Monday and likely come by Four Jeffries Thursday or Friday as long as I don't find something north of Bishop Creek to occupy my time. An open ended trip on my part that could last just a couple days or more than a week. I'm not too keen on spending $16 each night at Four Jeffries so will be interested in splitting that cost with others.

I was down in the Mono Lake area last Friday and noted even the highest aspen groves in the Rush and Lee Vining Creek slopes were showing just a little yellow. Reports from local Owens Valley sources for Bishop Creek last weekend show color at least a week later than normal. It seemed to indicate the better color in the main canyon groves is likely to occur on the October 7/8 weekend than the 30/1. The lack of subsequent reports during this last week reflects the usual lack of reports that occurs both during wildflower and fall leaf periods when those that visit too early discover they have embarrasingly wasted their time and gas.

The NWS long term forecast discussions for next week shows there will at least be some level of foul weather which for we photographers usually means both trouble and opportunties. Trouble because at this time of year we may find ourselves under too cloudy dim skies with chilly winds, possibly a bit of rain with snow up high, and the potential of aspen leaves already turning blowing off or developing spotty brown rot. And opportunities because when the sun does manage to poke through during such conditions, we may get to frame some of that white stuff decorating the high peaks with nice complements of clouds. So I'll be tossing my summer backpacking tent in the closet and grabbing my heavier 4-season tent as well as a bit of my winter gear. Also periods of foul weather can mean finding something else to do for hours or even a day or so when shooting becomes futile. So more food, especially snacks, and a couple or three good books. ...David

Weather...

NWS discussions for the extended point to 20-30% chance of precip with snow levels in the 7000 foot range. Rain and snow will be light, as these systems that will be are relatively dry. Winds will be mostly light with higher peak-ridge gusts. Fuel moisture is very low, especially in sage fields, so be extremely careful with fire of any type.

David's advice is good: ditch the summer tent and summer bag, and be sure to have warm clothing and bomb proof rain gear. Also, be sure to bring extra stove fuel and grab some firewood, too.

Hi Preston, I will be up there in the afternoon or evening of the 5th & in the Bishop area for 6th & 7th. I will be up in the main area west of Bishop shooting throughout those days. I will come to the campground to see if I can find you all too. I have an 05 Ford Escape, it is a real light color sort of a gold flake paint. Look forward to meeting everyone! :wavey:
