I went to the airshow in Sarnia yesterday. They didn't have a lot of stuff there, but the snowbirds were there.

It was tough handholding, and I lost a few shots to blur. I'm not sure I could track the planes on a tripod though.

Man-made birds, I like it.

Cool, Scott. I like the one you posted Saturday from the air show on your website too.

Needs some fill flash

Actually, a cool picture. It even took a second for my brain to realize that I was looking at airplanes rather than birds.

Thanks for posting.

Well....they are snowBIRDS, right?

Nice catch, Scott. Personally, I find it much easier to track and shoot airplanes w/o a tripod. Make sure you set your exposure at a high shutter speed, and you will lessen the chance of blur with jets. I was able to get shots of an F15 this summer....shutter speed was around 1/750 with only very minor blur noticable at 100% viewing.

Thanks Guys, I put some more up here if anyone is interested. I like airplanes, and always have, but to be honest I think are pretty pale imitations of birds.

Toni, do you try to get propeller blur at all. It would be nice to have the propeller blurry, but it must be hard to do that and get the plane sharp. I had a hard time getting the planes doing the head on pass too. It is hard to get them both in the frame, and becuase I am panning with one plane the other always seems to be blurry.

Scott,

I like to shoot airplanes, too!

If the plane has propellers, it's a different story. You just have to hope you aren't trying to shoot a jet and an older prop plane at one time, such as an F16 and a P38 Lightning (I just noticed on your site that you did indeed run into that!).. If there are props involved, yes, then you do need to get a blur to show movement. In that case, you would need to shoot at 1 /125 or less and pan with the plane. But if the plane is going slow enough (the old warbirds) then you don't need to worry too much about the airplane blurring at that shutter speed.

Nice images, Scott, and you did a good job of capturing the vapor coming out of the jet!

Thansk Toni. The vapour was just starting to form in that shot. I had a full frame shot of the F-18, and there was a lot more vapour, but I either missed focus or jiggled it a bit and the shot was blurry.
