While this software development isn't aimed at nature photographers, it is an indication of the way digital imaging may heading.

Is the era of large and expensive software programs such as Photoshop drawing to a close in favour of smaller programs tailored to different aspects of photography?

The U.K. company mentioned in the article, Anthropics Technology, is actually a a mobile phone company. Their product is MyPerfectPicture http://www.myperfectpicture.com/

The blurb they have on the Siggraph site is also quite interesting. http://esub.siggraph.org/cgi-bin/cgi/idDetail.html&CompanyID=656

As a percent of a yearly budget, photoshop is very inexpensive for most photographers.

The "after" picture with that story looks nothing more than softened from the original. It isn't any better in my opinion.

I agree with Walter.
