I have not posted in a while, but am still here lurking. Got a question for the Jerry Greer's of the group. I have come up to GSMNP for the last several october seasons and have been rewarded with many good pictures. While I am coming up again to GSMNP for 3 days this year, I am looking to spend the remaining 5 somewhere else to get some different scenes. (Also tired of the Gatlinburg scene and the crazy crowds at Cades Cove and pretty much everywhere in the park)
Right now I am looking at either the Brevard area to focus on waterfalls and some BRP scenes OR the Linville/Blowing Rock/Boone area for more overall scenes. I enjoy shooting lanscapes with a LF camera. Anybody have any feelings here??? Would be looking at about Oct 24-29 timeframe.
Appreciate any responses.

Hi Eric,
I am thinking that for the timeframe you are looking at, the Brevard area might be a better bet. It seems to me that every time I've been to the Linville area, fall peaks out sooner than that, usually the first couple of weeks in October. I've seen it hit at Grandfather mountain and Linville viaduct last week of September. Last year tho, it seems that Fall started a couple weeks later than usual. Every year has been different, what's been colorful one year has been a wash the next. In other words...It's a crapshoot!!

btw, I shoot lots of 4x5 too and I'm planning on taking the week of Oct 30 off. I'm just gonna get in the car and drive from one end of the BRP to the other. I'm bound to find something purty along the way to shoot
I second the choice for the Brevard area. There can be some spectacular colors at that time of year in the area, and numerous waterfalls. But Linville is not far from Brevard, so no reason not to hit both areas. Try Linville the first day and if it's no good, Brevard is only a couple hours away. Here is a shot from Brevard from a few years ago.

I third the recommendation for Brevard and the Transylvania county area. Also might be worth checking out the Cherohala skyway, Hamley, would that work at the end of October?
