Bull Elk Salad
Taken at Cataloochee 8/13/06
Alice and I spent a fun foggy morning chasing the light and critters:-) I cloned out the collar and tags on this bull who I think uses salad to help attract the ladies

Great job Leann, I really like how you captured the "Whole" family - and the mist is the icing on the cake :).

Very nice. That's funny. I've never seen that before.

Nick,Alice,Richard :-)
Thank you all. The bull later went on to horn some more pine trees in the back of the field but didn't have his headdress anymore maybe one of the cows got hungry.

Cool shot, Leanne.

I am suprised that they are scraping their antlers this soon.

I need to get back up there to photograph the elk. All of my elk images are from Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, and Canada. I was there at Cataloochie on the day they introduced the elk from the trucks to their temporary holding pens, and still have the slides somewhere. I havent been back there since

Richard,
Oh that must have been exciting. I have to check my files but I believe I took pictures of this same bull (#7) when he was younger and smaller. I try to go back every season . This fella is the "herd" bull and the others were hanging out at the Ranger station so it may be just him scraping this early.

Great shot Leann, it makes me want to head over that way even more now. Hopefully in the next few weeks I can come over. Still not exactly sure how to get there from townsend, but I will find my way. Any special area I need to go, walk to, drive to. To find great willing subjects like this. Or just luck of the daily draw.

Hey Cindy,
There may be a faster way to go but the easiest way that I can think of is to hit I-40 E and on the NC side take exit 20, turn right at the brown ski cataloochee sign -i can't remember the name of the rd-it's something ...creek road. Just follow that road into the park-it's only 11 miles but takes close to 30 minutes to cover. Stay on the road and you will pass the camping area and the white ranger house and go through a gate. It will open up to a area of meadows/fields and anywhere in there they can be found grazing at sunrise and near sunset-just like the deer at Cades Cove. The road through there is maybe 2 miles long.
