Thomas,

The bright shelf fungi on the dark tree trunk takes my eye away from the ferns and pholox. As a viewer the ferns and phlox are more interesting than the tree trunk. There is some interesting stuff in the lower right of the frame. The grey stone, green ferns and pink phlox could make an interesting intimate landscape.

What Les said.

Not that the fungi isnt interesting, but it might make the subject of another image itself. You have alot to work with in the foreground.

When you are coming to the SC Coast?

I like complex images that tell me something about the ecology of an area, and I like this one. To me, the main issue compositionally is the merger of the phlox and trunk, but from what I can see here, it would've been difficult to get an effective composition with all of these elements and no merger. Les' suggestion about focusing on the subjects in the foreground is a good one, too, if you're looking for an image that tells a different story.

Thanks all, I took several images of this little collection I'll see if I've got one that I can maybe crop the trunk out all together. I was pretty excited when I wondered up on this

Richard I'll be out there thurs thru sunday.
