I started taking photos seriously in support of my graduate research in the early 1970s. In my subsequent career as a professor, demand for photos led me into a diverse array of photo styles and techniques. It was natural to explore the world around me with cameras, and in short order my wife picked up a camera and began to explore her own interests. Twenty years ago, and ten years before I retired from the university and my wife retired from the state, we made the fortunate decision to apply our interests and talents to a photo business. It started as my wife’s portrait and wedding studio, but in short order I joined her and it evolved to reflect the broad scope of our interests and the market opportunities we found. Today Pennington Photography lives in its own commercial building paid for with a shutter release. Reflecting the flexibility that has helped us survive where most others fail, we have evolved seven overlapping but distinct “departments” in the business: Portrait and Wedding, Commercial and Advertising, Industrial and Aerial, Scientific, Stock, Editorial and Assignment, and Events. It always seems that as one sector slows, another picks up, making it a whole lot easier to succeed than relying on one sector alone. Notice that Nature is not on the list? That’s because it’s lurking in all our departments. |
