A bison bull is an imposing figure when staring at a photographer from close range. This bison is the largest bull in a herd that was moved from the National Bison Range in Montana to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR near Denver. The US Fish and Wildlife Service is managing six herds as one in a metapopulation management strategy to relieve a genetic bottleneck. Once numbering 50-60 million animals on the Great Plains, bison were nearly extinct in the 1880's.
