Sunset on Pawnee Buttes

For a brief moment, sunset lights the Pawnee Buttes before fading to darkness. The rugged sandstone buttes are icons of the Colorado shortgrass prairie and were landmarks for settlers crossing the plains. Remants of an ancient inland sea, the buttes provide important raptor nesting habitat for golden eagles, prairie falcons and peregine falcons.
