Black-rumped flameback, male

The black-rumped flameback is the commonest woodpecker in India, occurring in forests. The male, shown here, has a red crown, while the female has a black forecrown and red hindcrown. Note the white spots on its golden shoulders, white spots in the throat and the black rump (from which it gets its name). It is a medium-sized woodpecker (29 cm).
