The New Dungeness lighthouse stands near the tip of the Dungeness Spit. Located in the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge, the spit is the longest natural sand spit in the United States at about 5.5 miles. The lighthouse was built in 1857, guided not only ships and fishing vessels, but Native American war canoes that paddled from Canada across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to do battle on the Spit. The Refuge is home or stop over to over 200 species of birds, including many eagles that make their home there.
