Sole Survivor or Pioneer

This photograph sums up my current concerns about the way our planet is going, a lone sunflower in a sea of purple loosestrife (a predatory and invasive species). Is the sunflower the sole survivor or is it a pioneer. Neither plant appears naturally in this setting, the Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area, in Addison, Vermont. But as the planet changes, as it will inevitably, does it matter which plant wins or is it just our vanity that suffers. I don't have an answer.
