Ocean Falls, British Columbia is only accessible via boat or seaplane and is currently home for only about 40 residents. At it’s heyday, Ocean Falls was home to nearly 4,000, had a K-12 school system, its own hospital, and one of the province's largest hotels. The town itself, and the pulp and paper mill (the largest employer) were owned by a single company. Unfortunately, the company was struggling by 1970 and, in 1973, the town and pulp and paper mill were sold to the provincial government. In 1980, the government closed the mill and bulldozed most of the town. One building left standing is featured above. Look closely at the sign on the side of this building and you can see remnants of better days for Ocean Falls. It reads “Ocean Falls Yacht Club.”
