Couple of days ago, I’ve placed a detail picture of baobab tree on the close-up gallery. On Patricia request (to see the whole tree) I’ve prepared this combination.
The baobab trees may be the oldest life forms on the African continent. It can grow up to 25 meters tall and can live for several thousand years. The baobab is leafless for nine months of the year.
With their massive trunks, crooked branches and furry fruit, baobabs have learned how to adapt to a dry and hostile environment. They have no branches on the lower part of their smooth, silvery trunks, making them difficult to climb. The secret of the baobab's success in surviving in harsh environments and the reason for its massive trunk is that it has little wood fiber but a large water storage capacity. Each tree can hold up to 300 liters of water, enabling it to live through long periods without rain. Holes in the trunk provide ideal nesting sites for birds. The seeds are housed in a hairy pod that resembles a miniature rugby ball.
