The Matterhorn lies across the Swiss-Italian border, so that each end of the summit ridge lies in a different country. The photo was taken from the Swiss end, and the iron cross at the other end marks the 'Italian' summit. The Swiss end is the higher, at 4478m or 14,690ft, whilst the Italian end is lower by 1.1m. or 43 inches.
