Rain or shine, Shagawa Lake, outside Ely, is a common jumping-off point for wilderness fly-in trips. Here, canoe strapped to the floats, a deHavilland Beaver taxis for takeoff during a shower. The beaver, renowned as a bush plane for more than 50 years, remains a workhorse for fly-in outfitters and the U.S. Forest Service.
