Each one of Reuven's photographs seems to tell a story, reflected in the empathetic relationship with a person he photographs, provoking our emotions and imagination, we are also willingly drawn in to the drama.
These individuals are definitely not his "subjects"; rather, what consistently emerges is that indefinable " essence" of a real person. Reuven has an ability to reach beyond the surface veneers we protectively construct to capture personalities in a moment of truth and intimacy that is so powerful that one is only barely aware of the masterful craftsmanship of the image.
The witty portrait setting of the film critic Nachman Ingbar whose head and mouth are entangled in film, the laconic gaze of caricaturist Al Hischfield, the indefatigable stare of Shimon Perez; sometimes his images express a magical quality, saturated with colour, whilst the timeless and poignant black and white photographs of villagers in rural Sicily leave us in no doubt as to the harsh realities of their lives...
Born in Tel Aviv, in 1955, Reuven was given a camera by his uncle as a thirteen-year-old boy and was immediately fascinated by the creative potential of the photographic medium. His passion has not faltered during a professional career of some thirty years to date.
Following his studies in photography in Israel and London he was taken on as Assistant to the renowned portrait photographer Arnold Newman in New York, under whose influence he further developed his own skills and style.
Reuven's work caught the attention of MTV Networks, for whom he became a regular photographer. He rapidly developed a portfolio of commercial clients including Adweek, Winners, Newsweek, Business Week, Manhattan Inc and was regularly commissioned by major advertising agencies and Forbes 500 corporations.
In Israel, where he now lives, Reuven is recognised as one of the top political, editorial, fashion, advertising photographers shooting for an extensive portfolio of clients encompassing colour supplements for the Prestige newspapers, Coca Cola, Tuborg , Fedex, etc.
He is also regularly asked to lecture at photography schools in Israel.
Reuven especially enjoys the challenge of political & campaign photography, because of the significant role that image projection plays in the rapport with the electorate, bringing out certain aspects of personality. Without bias of course - his prolific work includes regular commissions to photograph major political figures such as Ariel Sharon , Shimon Peres, Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak. These images have been widely circulated, his style instantly recognisable. In conjunction, Reuven has developed a consultancy role in visual self awareness coaching; assisting politicians and business men to understand and employ their body language and image projection effectively during their political careers, in business interactions and in public relations.
Irrespective of whether the photograph taken is of a celebrity, the CEO of Tiffanys, a Prime Minister or a shepherd, itis Reuven's forte to gently enable each person to convey a core aspect of their soul and then capture that moment permanently within an image that draws us to work that is of an enduring quality.
