My photographs rarely, if ever, contain people - although much of the subject matter contains artifacts of former occupants. This may have started out accidentally, but has certainly been continued by design. I think that all my years in the business community left me wishing for an absence of people - and a different perspective - in my photography.
My preference is definitely black & white and toned images. Most of my photographs are “visualized” as gently toned and colored black and white or sepia toned images, even though the camera may take the pictures in color. This medium seems far more suited to my view of the world.
All of my current prints are "totally digital", although they are straight photographs. They were taken with a digital camera, and imported into Photoshop as “raw” images. They are then converted into a black and white image and toned and tinted. The actual coloration is dictated by the picture itself. Small amounts of the original colors are then brought back in and the image is dodged and burned – just as it would have been in the darkroom. The result is closer to a black and white than a color photograph. The prints are made using Epson Ultrachrome archival ink, and are printed on 100% cotton rag paper.
