Roger Maki has been a serious amateur photographer since 1975, beginning with a GAF brand manual 35mm SLR camera with a 50mm Chinon lens. He later added a 28mm Sears lens and a 135mm Suntar lens. In 1995 Roger upgraded to a Sigma SA-300 35mm SLR camera with a 28-200mm zoom lens, and has since added a 50mm macro lens, 400mm telephoto lens, and a 17-35mm wide angle zoom lens, all made by Sigma. In 1999 Roger added a Sigma SA-5 body. When that body died in 2004, he bought a Sigma SA-9 body.
Roger's transition to digital photography began in 2002 when he bought a Fujifilm FinePix A101 1.3 megapixel point-and-shoot camera. In 2005 Roger upgraded his digital capabilities by buying a Sigma SD10 10.2 megapixel SLR with 18-50mm and 55-200mm zoom lenses. In that same year, Roger won an online Fujifilm photo contest and his prize was a Fujifilm FinePix A350 5.1 megapixel point-and-shoot camera. In 2008 Roger upgraded yet again to a Sigma SD14 14.1 megapixel SLR.
Much of Roger's photography is self-taught from reading and practice, although he has attended a few seminars and workshops, such as the one-day Nikon School of Photography. He also participated in a Great American Photography Weekend workshop with Galen Rowell in 1994 and another with Art Wolfe in 1996. In 2000 Roger attended a weekend workshop taught by Baltimore fine arts photographer Tony Sweet, and in 2004 he attended a workshop taught by retired National Geographic photographer James Amos. He was a member of the Newark (Delaware) Camera Club from 1976-1977, and of the Tidewater Camera Club of Easton, Maryland from 1987-2005 and 2007-present. Most of Roger's photos are taken during family outings and vacations.
Roger has won numerous local camera club contests, including Slide of the Year three times and annual High Point Winner eight times. He is also a two time weekly winner in the Kodak International Newspaper Snapshot Awards contest (Wilmington, DE News-Journal). Roger's photos have been published in the Easton (Maryland) Star-Democrat daily newspaper, the Baltimore Sun newspaper's Sunday travel section, Boys' Life magazine, Lens magazine, an Easton Business Management Association promotional brochure, and three calendars. He has had one cover photo published in the "It's the Weekend" supplement to the Star-Democrat. In 2007 one of Roger's photos was selected for display in the "Your Favorite Places" section of Outdoor Photographer magazine's Web site.
Roger works full time as a Quality Engineer for Sensata Technologies’ Power Controls division (formerly Airpax Corporation), in Cambridge, Maryland, where he has been since 1979. He and his wife, Linda, have two sons and one granddaughter.
