I attended graduate school in Hawaii. Somehow, spending all of your time sitting in a lab in Hawaii is just worse than, say, sitting in a lab in Minnesota. Photography started as a way to prove to myself and others that I wasn't totally wasting the 'tropical paradise' aspect of my life. Enter Photoshop, which entertained me through many long laboratory hours and generally kept me (slightly more) sane through the dissertation. A few years later, I'm now a professor, and photography is still my coping mechanism.
