I’m a nature and wildlife photographer, based in Southern Alberta Canada where I specialize in North American nature, wildlife and abstract photography. I’ve been interested in our natural world and photography for most of my life, so it was inevitable that at some point I would combine the two. I love visiting and photographing our undisturbed natural places, and try to convey what I’m seeing, feeling and sensing in my images. In so doing it’s my hope that I may encourage you to experience some of our natual spaces for yourself, and help us safeguard them for future generations. For as an ancient First Nations proverb states, “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”
Many of the fauna shots in this portfolio also contain, to varying degrees, elements of wildlife habitat. Sometimes dubbed “enviroscenes” or "living landscapes" by fellow nature photographers, I feel the combination of wildlife and habitat creates a more complete image, and hopefully provides a better understanding of nature’s complex interconnectivity, as well as an appreciation for the hardships that wildlife sometimes must endure.
As a wildlife photographer I’m very conscious about intruding into habitat, and do not use calling or baiting techniques, instead I make every attempt not to disturb or stress wildlife with my presence. For me the perfect encounter, and one I always strive to achieve, is to obtain a few good subject shots, and then move on leaving wildlife exactly as I found them.
Unless stated otherwise, all images posted to this portfolio are of free ranging animals and birds taken by myself in natural wildlife habitat, and other than compositional cropping and minor edits for tone, contrast, colour etc, they remain unaltered.
I hope you enjoy viewing my images as much as I enjoyed creating them.
Cheers
Rick
