Philip Newman was born in Wales, graduated with an honours degree in Geology from Bristol and now works as a Geologist in Aberdeen, Scotland. He has had a lifelong passion for birds and started his photographic journey in 1976 when he moved to Aberdeen. His interest in photography was inherited from his father who was an industrial photographer.
What started off as a passion to photograph birds has now expanded to cover mammals, wildflowers and landscapes. When the opportunity arises Philip enjoys experimenting with lighting, viewpoint and techniques to create an imaginative and atmospheric image in preference to the ‘straight’ portrait which can lead to nature photography being considered repetitive and sometimes boring. He is in no doubt that the flexibility and instant assessment offered by digital cameras is a major boom to wildlife photography. Philip uses Canon digital cameras and Canon’s imaged stabilised lenses. He has been lucky enough to visit many interesting places around the world, particularly Alaska and the USA, in his quest for wildlife images.
