About Me:
My connection and appreciation for the outdoors began long before my passion for photography. Even as a child I was very sensitive to the natural things going on around me, and I found myself at peace in the forest. I spent countless hours exploring the quiet woods around the family cottage in Northern Wisconsin. I’ve always been comfortable in nature, and I enjoy the solitude of exploring backcountry areas off the beaten path.
The purpose of my photography is to share these moments I experience in nature, being true to the land and the splendor it posses; my hope is that I may inspire exploration, trigger a lost memory, or spark an appreciation for the incredible beauty that surrounds us all.
My Equipment:
Like most photographers today, I began shooting with film cameras. I went from 35mm to medium format, and eventually graduated to Large format. I built my own darkroom and began experimenting heavily with black and white printing. I was fascinated with the printing process, and spent endless nights working in my lab.
I truly enjoyed working in my darkroom, and shooting on my 4x5 camera, but as time passed it became harder and harder to find chemicals, papers, films, and the cost was extreme. I was very hesitant to make the switch to digital, but finally about two years ago it made sense to me, and I bought my first digital SLR.
The transition to digital was a learning experience, but in the end it was still the same principles as my film shooting. The “wet” or chemical darkroom has simply been replaced by the “dry” or computer controlled darkroom. The same practices and techniques are still used, just performed in different ways. Once again I found myself fascinated with the process of creating images.
My main camera today is a Canon 50d digital SLR, and I still shoot on my 4x5 Crown Graphic from time to time.
