My interest in birds, birding, and photography all began one day in December of 2000, when I purchased my first SLR. I'm still not exactly sure why, but after receiving my camera, I immediately went to a nearby gravel pit and started shooting waterfowl gathered around some rare open water. I'd never shown any interest in birds before, but I've been shooting primarily birds ever since that day.
After being dissatisfied with the "reach" that initial 35mm equipment gave me, I had a 2-year phase where I primarily digiscoped. I loved the reach, but it was impossible to do flight shots, and it's an extremely awkward and difficult method for shooting photos. Finally in March of 2004, I purchased my first DSLR and some nice Canon "L" glass. I've been thrilled with the quality of shots the equipment can provide.
This is still definitely just a hobby, i.e., I'm not going to quit my day job!! I work as a scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey, analyzing land use change from satellite imagery. However, I find my mind thinking more and more about birds, birding, and photography, and can only dream of somehow turning it into a full-time job!!
Enjoy the photos!!
