Let’s start with the simple facts... I began pursuing nature photography seriously in 2002. At this point I am a generalist. My files are composed primarily of images of birds, wildflowers, mammals, and landscapes both intimate and grand. I also have numerous images of trees and shrubs plus a smattering of other delightful subjects in nature. Most of my images are taken either in Virginia or Montana, though I do shoot other locations.
I hold a bachelor’s degree in Forestry and Wildlife Management from Virginia Tech. I live in the lovely Commonwealth of Virginia. By day I work as an urban forester, trying to do my small part to minimize the damage we do as we build our human culture. But always, always my heart is drawn to what God has built, to the life he sustains... to these living testimonies of goodness and grace.
This leads me to what motivates me to photograph. My primary goals are first, to reveal something of who God is, encouraging a deeper understanding of him and his creation. Second, to convey something of those moments in time where all is stilled by a beauty so sublime and immense that one’s soul can scarcely take it in and never fully will. Perhaps I can spark the viewers’ memories of such moments that have touched them personally. Finally, I hope to encourage a greater appreciation of this natural world of which we are a part.
In this portfolio you will find selections from the most common subjects in my files. I think you will also see my attempt to represent these subjects without digital fiction, i.e., in a manner faithful to the beauty they inherently possessed when the image was shot. From the tiny brilliance of a warbler, to the ungainly form of a mother moose keeping a watchful eye on her calf, to the first rays of dawn kissing the clouds that brush the mountaintops - all creation sings!
