Away from the Crowd

I like the inclusion of the OOF birds in the background of this image because it makes me feel that the Marbled Godwit I focused on "is" standing out from the crowd. And in some respects the OOF birds are no different than oof grasses, shrubs, trees or any other part of natural habitats. I think they add depth to the image rather than distract.

I like the one leg raised and bent pose, being able to see the raised foot so crisply and the varying hues of the water.

D200, 80-400mm@400mm, f/7.1, 1/800, ISO 200, HH, kneeling low enough to get a wet bottom, I could not get a lower angle. No flash. Cropped for composition.

I appreciate your comments & critiques.

Lia,

I agree with you on bg and pose. Beautiful image and the colors are also very nice.

No nits here. I like the low angle, light, pose, etc. I could go either way with the BG but I certainly do not find it distracting as is. :toast:

Hi Lia,

I really think this works quite well. Normally I find OOF birds quite distracting but these are enough OOF that they become almost abstract. I think if you had more DOF it would have ruined it. As is, pretty cool. :toast:

Lovely, Lia. I like the lighting and the lifted leg in mid position. Sharp with a nice catch light too. And I agree that the background birds are OOF enough to not be a distraction in the least. I like your title too. Well done!

Lia:
The image of the bird is so sharp, the bird has such striking markings, and the pose is so nice that it is difficult to imagine a background in the normal habitat of the bird that would ruin this shot. I'm ambivalent about the OOF birds in the background. I'm sure I would like the shot if they were not there, but I'm not sure I like it more because they are there.

Totally agree with you about the oof birds being an asset. They make for a much more interesting photo in my opinion. Good title too Lia. My complements on the nice low angle. :toast: :toast:

A very lovely shot, Lia. I agree with your comments. In a lot of senses, the flock of birds is also an organism, in its own way. Any time we can take shots that make that point, it adds to the photo. The OOF birds help.

I like everything about this image, the color, lighting and feather detail is outstanding and the OOF birds in the BG actually add to it for me. :toast:

Nice one Lia, I've always been comfortable with oof birds in photos of species where they are normally encountered in flocks, in fact I prefer it.

I agree that the OOF background birds help make the main subject stand out more than if they were absent. Great capture!

Beautiful light, love the leg up and the angle. The OOF birds in the background keep drawing my eyes away from the main subject. I wonder what would happen if you just burned the OOF birds down a little. The one on the left is especially bright and close to the edge of the frame. For me, that is always an item that pulls my eyes to that point. Congrats on this image. It has a lot going for it.
