Quote by Audrey II in the Little Shop of Horrors. In reality, whatever that is, this is a bud from some type of magnolia tree. Denver Botanical Gardens earlier today.

Canon 40D
Canon 180mm
ISO 400
Composite of 10 or so images at F/5.0

RAW, Helicon Focus, CS3, Lightroom, tripod, natural light, cropped from the right.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

The contrasting colours are great to see, unbelievable that they can be the same. Genesis at work for sure Pat. Its like its being held in jaws and being presented. Amazing. On a side note, you sure can take great shots, this is excellent !!!. Fantastic perspective and a great background. :toast: :toast:

Thanks you two. Danny, I wouldn't have thought of the title, if I hadn't seen your "inside out" over on the art gallery.

This is a nice capture, Pat. Excellent detail in the dew and bristly looking things.

Excellent use of Helicon Focus...love the detail, the water droplets, and the unobtrusive background. Probably too late but this would make a nice series as you photograph the bud through its maturation process.

Very nice indeed! Great job with the techs to get detail throughout! Just out of curiosity for someone who doesn't do a whole lot of macro... Assuming the conditions would allow how would a single image taken at f22 or so compare with dof?

Beautifully-lit! BG is perfect to show of the misty pubescence.

Oh, now! That's a great shot, Pat! The detail, the color, the bg, the little droplets all create just a super image. And it's fun, too. Yeah, feed me– reminds me in a way of a hatchling in a nest.

This would've been great in flora, too, but it's nice to apply it to a fun theme here.

Thank you all for the comments. They're much appreciated.

Mark,
If I can get back to the botanical gardens and get the right shooting conditions, (mostly no wind), I'll try to get at least one more. It';s a neat idea. Thanks.

Kirk,
I think I would have been able to get most of the bud (80%) in focus at f/22 but the branch would then have been much more pronounced in the shot and I would have needed to blur it to try and get this effect. Also, more of the bg would have been visible and I really wanted the emphasis on the bud. I'm still learning how to use Helicon but it's value lies exactly in this type of shot. It's a nuisance doing mutliple exposuers but since I bracket a lot of shots anyway and since i use a tripod; and since I'm used to dragging a ton of lens and tripod around for avian, this approach feels pretty agile to me. (smile) Makes my wife insane though. She's usually taken a t00 images handheld and is bored by the time I've done one series. You can download a trial of Helicon I think, if you want to play with it. Regards, Pat
