The Three Peaks and the Milky Way

Canon EOS 40D, Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, 30" f/3.5, iso 3200, tripod. Dolomites, Italy.

[Click here to view the photo at 1200px]

Taken yesterday in complete darkness. It has been necessary to use ISO 3200 to capture as many stars as possible and to show well the Milky Way, but the image quality is surprisingly good for 3200!

BTW, sorry for the lack of commenting in the latest months, I am a bit busy and I don't have a lot of time ;-)

Wow Juza! Amazing! Iso 3200? I guess the 40D is really as good as they say it is... I think I'm gonna pick one up... This photo convinced me. I have been shooting with the 350D long enough now.
Beautiful image! :toast: :jump:

Great use of the new camera to get the most out of the sky. The zodiac lights are very prominant and set the terrain apart well from the sky. The streak in the sky...plane or meteor??? If it's a plane, I might take it out! :wavey:

Awesome stuff. Is that light pollution on the horizon? It actually enhances the shot. That streak could be a satellite too.

Beautiful. Like how the Milky Way seems to extend out the top of the peaks. If you were to print this you might consider removing the satellite streak.

Absolutely beautiful! Nice clean composition. Might be tempted to see if you can change the ornage colour at the bottom more towards a blue. Love it. Tristan

Iso 3200? I guess the 40D is really as good as they say it is

I really like the 40D - but its great advantage are the new features. The image quality is about the same of the previous 20D (actually, it has a little more resolution but it is also a little noisier). More info in my review: http://www.juzaphoto.com/eng/articles/canon_eos_40d_review.htm

The streak in the sky...plane or meteor???

Honestly I don't know...I thought it was a meteor so I didn't clone it out...but I'm not sure ;-)

Is that light pollution on the horizon?

Yes, it is light from the distant villages - I didn't even see it by naked eye, but it was visible in the 30" ISO 3200 exposure.

This is really nice. Love the light behind the mountains and obviously the stars and Milky Way. Very very clean for ISO 3200.

Wide open lens, 30", iso 3200. Quite amazing what that was able to achieve. The distant village was definitely your friend here. Excellent.

Nothing to add but I agree with the others, very well done---I attempted some shots like this last week, but against a nearly featureless prairie, they weren't much more than just stars against a flat horizon.

Juza what a fabulous idea for a shot. This type of shot at the ISO setting you used, above anything else I have seen shows us "film" buffs exactly why digital has such an important role to play in photography. I seriously doubt an image as clean and noiseless as this would have been possible on film no matter what the format.

Superb shot!! :toast: :toast: Love the placement of the "belt", and the silhouettes keep me well anchored to the ground. Looks to be a small streak, either from a plane, satellite, or meteor on the right half way up I might consider cloning out. But regardless, this is some awesome work!

Very nice! In fact incredible. The only thing I would hate if it was my shot is, that it probably doesn't print all too large. (or does it?)
I was there from Oct 15th to Oct 17th btw and have tried a somewhat similar shot (well similar... with 4x5", Velvia ISO 50 (!!!) on film, exposure from 19.30 to 05.30..) but from a different viewpoint. I saw somebody (I remember two people) with a small (green) van arriving kinda late on the 15th and looking around with a tripod and all... maybe it was you? I was there with a big white motorhome and was busy setting up another startrail shot on the Cadines. What a small world.
Congrats on the EP.

Hi Georg!

Thanks for the comment! I've printed it 20x30 centimeters and its looks fine! In larger prints the noise is more visible, but still ok for my tastes :-)

I've been there from Oct 13th to Oct 14th and I have a blue Honda Civic, so the guy with the tripod was not me...but we missed for just one day ;-)

Out of curiosity, did you sleep in the Locatelly hut? I always sleed there, it is placed in a panoramic point with a spectacular 360 degrees view

Cool shot Juza! Very creative. Do think the iso performance is low enough for an A2 size print?

Btw Juza what do you think of the AF performance (speed mainly) of 40D compared to 30D? :wavey:

Thanks for the comment!

I've printed it A4, in larger prints there would be for sure some noise, even though it is not too bad fro 3200 (this is a 100% crop).

The AF feels a bit faster, even though I don't see a night and day difference.

Thanks for the reply Juza, that indeed is an amazing crop, thanks for sharing. About the AF, do you see a big difference with the 1D3 than compared to 40D?
Cheers :wavey:

The 1D3 that I tried had the well known focus problem so, yes, I've seen a difference (in favor of the 40D) ;-)

I'm looking forward to try another 1D3 when the focus problem will be fixed...
