Howdy Piet. This guy is definitly in a hostile environment. How far does the sand go before you find foliage?

It depends in which direction. The closest would be about 200 Km away, due East. The furthest about 1000 Km due South. This guy lives on small reptiles, insects, and the occasional scavenged dead seabird or fish. Technically the Namib is a beach -- the world's largest, with all the characteristics of a beach except umbrellas and suntan lotion.

Doesn't get much more hostle than that. The size of the jackal against the expanse of sand, and the curve of the dune really make this a nice shot.

Thanks, Piet, for the geography lesson. It makes the image more powerful to know how far he has to go to find a more hostpitable environment.
