Hippo leg for lunch

This black-backed jackal managed to get his fair share of a young hippo that was killed by lions (after the lions had left).

I wanted to get out of the car and move into a better position and angle, but my wife wouldn't let me! Next time I go without her that's for sure.

Vincet,

my wife behaves in a similar way, altough I hae to say that without her driving, I would not have been able to make many of the pictures... That is the other siet of the coin...

I find this image very intimate. One has the feeling of participating in the situation. Actually I don't see an disadvantage in the angle of photography. The light and the technical part look very good also. I wish to see the whole body of the jackal. That missing leg at the top left site (even when the part is not sharp) is a bit unfortunate in my opinion. Since I do not think that this is your only image, I am pretty sure that you have some other composition varoiations that may have been in the sugested way...

Very nice light! The look and the hair of the jackal are perfect.

Wonderful shot Vincent. Don't get too close next time. Wouldn't want the next post to be "Vincent leg for lunch" .

Wonderful textures and detail on the jackal and his meal. Do you have a shot w/the whole jackal in view?

Hi Vincent,

I like what you've captured here. You did a very good job with the lighting (or processing) and I quite like the detail in the jackal's head, especially the eye. I like the crop as well - I have no need to see more of the jackal - I personally don't see what having the rest of the hind leg in the frame would add.

This one works very well with me - thanks for sharing it!

Very nice behavioral shot, Vincent! I must say I feel a bit sorry for the hippo, but that's nature! I really like the pose of ears of the jackal. I think he is having a hard time chewing on this leg!

Brutal shot! Cool.....Beautiful light and sharpness. But as mentioned earlier with your lion portrait this would have been an excellent situation for your 100-400... Zooming out, making a composition with the animals body would have had my preference here. Anyway...congrats this EP! :toast:

Well, your wife probably wouldn't like to take you home in bite sized pieces... Congrats on the EP! Quite a shot. Life is brutal, and Africa has to be the best reminder of Nature in the raw.

I have selected this image for the Editor's Pick, because of its strong visual impact. It really documents this animal as it is, an oportunist that will survive with the reminders that other leave. Once it gets possesion of a piece of food, it will not gave it up easyly. That is something that is in my opinion visible in this image. Especially the strong eye contact emphsizes that charcter. It seems as it would be watching the surroundings, to protect its "prey". That strong visual impact forgives the minor nit in my opinion of having not include the rest of the body...

Very nice Vincent - like everything about it. In getting out the car to get "a better angle" you may have lost the shot altogether - I suspect the jackal may well have picked up the leg and scarpered to a safer distance.
