I just got back from backpacking around Mt Hood with Jeremy Cram, the mountain was playing hide and seek as waves fog were rolling in and over us. I was bored while we were waiting for the mountain to reappear so I decided to be a dork and set up this self portrait.. This was taken as the mountain finally decided to reappear for about 15 seconds.

I was using the 10 second timer and scrambling up the rocks to get into position in time. The mountain was playing games though and would cloud up right before the shutter would go off, so it took about 10 trys. It was tons of fun, although Jeremy was having a good laugh at my expense watching me scramble over and over

I have a version without the tree as well, but I like it better with it personally.

Great shot, yeah I agree about the tree, gives it even more scale. The model tops it all off. It must take a lot of nerves to get right up the edge.

The model is me, It was a bit sketchy to get into position since my timer is only 10 seconds

Just for reference here is the other version. No tree was harmed in the making of this photo :)

Hey go easy on the beer willya!

Seriously - this is an incredible shot ... I would've removed that tree out, but the more I look at it, the more it reminds me of how you standing up there dwarfs that tree too.

Amazing shot!

10 seconds is the longest I know of on the 5D, if there is an extended timer mode let me know.

That is very cool, Zack! I am getting dizzy from looking at you standing at the edge of the cliff. Wow. The view is amazing! The mountain top showing from the clouds is awesome. Great photo!

I like it with the tree best. Nice shot. I never realized the fog could move that fast.

I guess there is something I do not understand in the making of this photograph.

Wow. cool shot. My first impression was that I didn't like the tree. After looking at the version without the tree, I've decided my first impression was wrong. It does help with scale and perspective. Very innovative shot. Glad you didn't fall off in your scramble to get up there before the shutter fired!

I like with tree, with less halo around the cliff and you, please :toast:

Innovative shot that I can see in Backpacker magazine anyday now, I'm sure

The halo around the lower bit of cliff and myself is due purely to web sharpening, and what can be perceived as a halo in the upper left part of the cliff is actually the next wave of fog about to envelop me and the cliff I'm standing on. That was the last we saw of the mountain for quite some time, so good thing it worked out on that try

Zach,

Glad I popped in to M&N! Pure and simple, this gives me the heebeejeebees.... You wouldn't catch me standing there - or for that matter scrambling to get there!

I like both versions. Incredible.

Zack, would you have me believe you scrambled up that steep cliff face in less than 10 seconds over and over?  I suspect you took another route. Nice shot.

Hehe, amazingly that is the route I took to scramble up, straight up the face there. It really wasn't all that bad.

Nice story, hats off for the artistic performance just in time, and your composition of course  Reminds me of CD Friedrich, the Wanderer above the Sea of Fog....

One of the best M&N I have seen for sometime. I like the minimalist look : 4 subjects separated by space. This shot could make you a packet as stock.

how come you didn't just ask Jeremy to take the picture after you climbed up there the first time?
I know, where's the fun in that?
Plus then it would not be YOUR shot
